Casino licences explained for Irish players

Ireland only started licensing online operators in 2026, so most sites an Irish player meets carry a licence from somewhere else. Six guides on the authorities you will see in a casino's footer, and what each one can actually do for you.

The footer badge is a postal address

For a player, the practical value of a licence is knowing where a complaint goes when a withdrawal stalls or an account is closed. Each authority has its own complaint route, its own rules for how operators handle player money, and its own appetite for enforcement. Some run or require a free dispute service; others expect you to exhaust the operator's process first. It is far better to know which kind you are dealing with before a deposit than after.

Where Ireland stands in 2026

The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 created the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, and its public register went live with remote betting licences on 1 July 2026. Licences for online casino gaming open later, during 2027 and 2028. Until then, the casino side of the Irish market runs on licences issued elsewhere, which is why the other five guides exist. The legal background is on gambling regulation in Ireland, and the register entries of the big betting brands are quoted on our comparison pages.

Three checks that work for any licence

What no licence can promise

No regulator guarantees you will win or that the RTP on the game screen will be the return on your evening. What they supervise is the process: certified random number generators, the handling of player funds, and how complaints are answered. Keeping to a budget is still your job; our responsible gambling page has the tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is online casino licensed in Ireland?

Not yet. The GRAI began licensing remote betting on 1 July 2026; licences for online gaming, which covers casino games, are due to open during 2027 and 2028.

What is the safest casino licence?

There is no official ranking. The UK and Malta impose the most detailed player-protection rules; Curaçao tightened its framework considerably with the law that took effect in late 2024.

How do I check a casino's licence?

Click the regulator's seal in the footer. It should open the regulator's own page or register, naming the licensed company. Then check that name against the site's terms and conditions.

Who do I complain to about an online casino?

First the casino, in writing, through its complaints procedure. If that fails, the regulator or dispute service named in its terms and conditions.
