The price nobody mentions: return to player
A progressive jackpot is funded by skimming a slice off every stake and adding it to the prize. That slice comes out of the game's running return. So the slot with the enormous jackpot pays you back less in ordinary play than a comparable game without one. You are buying a lottery ticket inside the machine — that is an accurate description, not a criticism.
